Art Therapy For Teens Introduction

There has been a reported increase in the number of teens and young adults that are struggling with their mental health. I am a creative therapist registered with the Health Care Professionals Council working within the Liverpool, Merseyside community delivering art therapy workshops for teens.

Art Therapy For Young Adults

Teenagers and young adults are more informed about mental health issues now than teenagers were in the past.  We tell teenagers that their desperate, wretched and forlorn states of mind are just down to teenage hormones. This attitude has only just recently changed. We say that young people are resilient. They attempt to battle on despite their hurts and confusion in an effort to keep up with social expectations. In order to support and increase their resilience, it is important that they are as equipped to deal with tumultuous emotional experiences as possible. This is where art therapy for young adults is useful.

Art Therapy For Youth

The art therapy for teens workshops focuses on teaching young adults how to use art therapy for emotional regulation,  supporting individual emotional health and mental well-being. Whilst we educate young people about mental health it is also essential to help them to learn tangible practical skills that they can use to deal with their heightened feelings. It is essential we give them the tools to understand how to process the sensitive emotions that they experience.

Art Therapy For Adolescent Depression

Young people will learn art therapy techniques which will help them to learn more about how to manage their emotions. They will learn how to process emotions instead of being overwhelmed by them. Learning practical skills in these workshops will help to prevent them from developing mental health conditions such as depression. Through participating in the art therapy workshops the young people can see that they are not isolated in their emotional struggles. They will see that other people experience difficult emotions, which may also be similar to their own.

How Can Art Therapy Help With Depression?

In my art therapy workshops, I introduce young people to practical creative art therapy techniques that will help them to use art therapy for emotions and organising their thoughts to assist in reducing stress and anxiety. They also learn about how the subconscious influences their state of mind. This will help them to understand the importance of recognising and editing unhelpful thoughts. After introducing art therapy techniques and trying them out within the workshops, the young people will be able to use these methods independently as and when they are needed to deal with situations as they arise.
